Lent Meditation: Day 18 - March 7, 2026
📖 Scripture Verse
Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud,
be gracious to me and answer me!
“Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!”
Your face, LORD, do I seek.
Psalm 27:7-8
🕯️Meditation
This psalm, attributed to David, shows him calling out to God to hear him, and receiving the response in the voice and intuition of his innermost being. When we call out in prayer to God, seeking to be seen by God, and to drawer closer in relationship to him, God’s answer may come in the whispering, quiet movement inside our own hearts. “Seek his face.” In Christian community, we often speak of the spiritual work of discernment. That is the listening and seeking to understand the voice and movement of God that unfolds in our innermost being. Our hearts will often encourage us to seek the face of God, and God desires that we do seek him. In the devotion “The Way of the Cross” there is a station where we recall a woman wiping the face of Jesus on his journey to Golgotha. While there is no Bible verse that records this, it is an old and pious legend. The prayer that we use at this station in the Episcopal Church is the collect for the last Sunday after the Epiphany: “O God who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory….” (BCP p. 217).
In seeking the face of God, our own lives our transformed. As we search for God, and glimpse his beauty, our own lives begin to reflect that. When Jesus taught us to “seek the Kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33), he was not just sending us on a journey, be teaching us how to be illuminated by his love.
🙏 Prayer
Loving God, my heart longs for you. Help me to seek you faithfully. In my seeking of you, help me see your face, and be changed that I may reflect your light and life to those around me. Amen.
